Police in Victoria, British Columbia have launched an investigation after an officer was caught on video allegedly kicking two men during an arrest.
Authorities responded after receiving reports of a fight involving eight men early Sunday. Sgt. Grant Hamilton, a spokesman for the Victoria force, said one man was being kicked in the head when officers arrived. That man was taken to hospital and released and authorities said he’s not cooperating with investigators.
Six others were taken into custody, but were later released without charge.
A witness to the event captured 56 seconds of the police response on video and posted it on YouTube. The video shows a police officer apparently kicking a man on the ground who had already been restrained.
Shortly after, the same officer orders another man to get down. That man complied and the officer and a colleague then allegedly kicked him in the stomach and back.
The police complaint commissioner will be monitoring the investigation, led by the police department’s professional standards section.
