GM To Create New Positions & Recall Laid-Off Workers In Oshawa & Ingersoll

Despite the still-sluggish economy General Motors has good news for some of its laid-off workers.

A surge in demand for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain has prompted the automaker to add a third shift at its Oshawa assembly plant and recall about 600 workers. The company will also recall all laid-off employees at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont. and possibly hire people to fill 70 new positions.

The Equinox and Terrain are currently built in Ingersoll, but some of that work will be transferred to the Oshawa facility.

Oshawa’s third shift will start in October and the positions in Ingersoll are expected to be filled by August.

There were reports in early January that GM planned to hire as many as 1,000 people to build the Cadillac XTS sedan in 2012 and assemble a newer-model Impala a year later.

With serious help from Washington, Ottawa, and Ontario GM has managed to weather the economic hardship of last year.
