QEW Reopens After Fatal Crash

A terrible crash on the Toronto-bound QEW claimed a man’s life Friday morning.

The collision involving a car and a tractor-trailer happened shortly before 7am on the eastbound QEW just west of Erin Mills Parkway, causing severe traffic backups.

A 39-year-old man in a Honda sedan rear-ended the tractor-trailer, which had stopped on the right shoulder with a mechanical problem.

The jam made it difficult for emergency vehicles to reach the scene. An Ornge air ambulance made it to the crash site, but the Honda driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 61-year-old truck driver, from Vineland, was not injured.

And a second incident was narrowly averted – as the helicopter took off, it ran into a wire. There were no patients on board the Ornge ambulance and the two pilots and two paramedics on board were not injured.

According to a statement from the company, “the aircraft returned to the Toronto base immediately and without incident.”

After an inspection directed by the manufacturer, Sikorsky, the helicopter received minor repairs and will be back in service on Saturday.

The area was closed to traffic but reopened at noon.
