One Fifth Of Canadians Struggling To Pay For Housing: Report

About one fifth of Canadians are living in homes they can’t afford, according to a recent study.

A report released by the Canadian Conference Board suggests there’s a dearth of affordable and quality housing.

Housing is considered unaffordable if it consumes more than 30 per cent of a family’s gross income.

The report says the 20 per cent of Canadians who are struggling to pay the mortgage or rent are sacrificing other necessities, including nutritious food and recreational activities and the conference board suggests that ultimately affects national productivity.

“Developers can be helped to build more affordable housing units through a combination of incentives and assistance from government, and increased awareness of the opportunities to make a profit serving this segment of the market,” the conference board’s director of education and health, Diana MacKay, said in a statement.
