Sixth Man Arrested In 2006 Shooting At After-Hours Party

More than four years after an early morning shooting claimed the life of Mervyn “Mikey” Spence, police have arrested a sixth and final suspect.

On November 4, 2006 at about 4am, Spence got into a fight with a group of people while at an after-hours party at the Malibu Marie Restaurant and Lounge in Brampton. Detectives say the altercation continued in the parking lot, where Spence was shot and killed.

Vancouver police had picked up the final suspect, Michael Owen Popert, 32, (pictured) on an unrelated matter. But acting on a Canada-wide warrant, they arrested him on Wednesday for accessory after the fact to murder.

Last weekend, Peel police traveled to Vancouver and took Popert into custody. He was brought back to the GTA Monday evening and was to appear in a Brampton court on Tuesday.

Five other suspects have been arrested since spring of last year. They are Marlan McLean, 27, Courtney Benjamin, 42, Anthony Campbell, 38, and Everald Oliver Brissett, 40, of Toronto, and Ervin Anthony Malcolm, 33, of Mississauga.
