Toyota Sales Climb 24 Per Cent In March Despite Safety Issues

Toyota Canada shrugged off a massive global recall for the second month in a row, reporting a sales increase of 24 per cent in March.

Despite recalling 270,000 vehicles in Canada over problems with the accelerator pedals, Toyota says its car sales were up 18 per cent while truck sales gained 36 per cent compared to a year earlier. Meanwhile, Ford says it sold more vehicles in Canada than any other automaker in March.

The company says it sold more than 22,000 vehicles last month, up 29 per cent from a year ago.

And Hyundai continued its rapid climb in market share, reporting a 25 per cent jump in sales to more than 11,000 units in March.

Other automakers will release their March sales numbers later today.
