Group Argues For Year-Round Shopping

Good news for shopaholics: a local advocacy group wants the City to consider allowing stores to open year round, including on holidays.

Designated tourist areas and shops outside the city already stay open on statutory holidays – an unfair advantage over retailers forced to close, argues John Kiru of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas.

“I think it’s the ambiguity and the clarity we’re trying to address and it comes down to choice. We want to give the small business community and the malls the ability to compete,” Kiru said.

“A lot of jurisdictions outside of Toronto are starting to permit holiday shopping. Just recently Square One got permission from Mississauga council.”

The issue is on the agenda at next week’s meeting of the economic development committee and could be heard by council within a month.
