Three Suspects Wanted For Sex Attack Near York U

A woman is recovering in hospital and investigators are searching for three suspects following a sexual assault near York University.

The attack happened around 12am Wednesday on Murray Ross Parkway, near Keele and Finch.

The 20-year-old university student was reportedly heading to her apartment building when the men wearing hoodies approached and dragged her to a grassy area where she was attacked. This assault has been described as particularly violent.

A woman who lives in the same apartment building called police, but emergency crews were already on their way.

“I saw them come in with a gurney and the young lady did not want to leave. She seemed just terrified,” Graziela McBean said.

Another man mistook the woman’s screams for students partying.

“Students live all around here so it’s hard to tell what’s going on,” Mark Winkler said.

It happened just one week after Daniel Katsnelson was sentenced to eight years in jail for raping two first-year students in the York University dorm rooms.

Several York students reside in the area where this assault happened and on Wednesday the York Federation of Students called on university officials to release a long-awaited safety audit.

“Sexual violence is sadly becoming an all-too-common event around York University’s campus,” Darshika Selvasivam, Vice-President of Campaigns and Advocacy for the York Federation of Students, said in a statement Wednesday.

“How many more women are going to have to survive sexual assault and rape before the York administration takes real action to protect women on and around campus?”

In 2008 students demanded the school conduct a safety audit. The Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC) carried out the study.

“The York University administration must stop dragging its feet on releasing the results of the METRAC report,” Selvasivam said. “The York administration has a responsibility to students living both on and around campus, and must take swift action to ensure that every student lives and studies in an environment free from fear and violence.”

The victim didn’t know her attackers.

No suspect descriptions have been released yet as authorities are still trying to put together more specific details of the attackers.

If you saw anything or have any information that could help detectives, call the Sex Crimes Unit at (416) 808-7474 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
