Mammoliti Wants To Arm Bylaw Enforcement Officers

Mayoral candidate Giorgio Mammoliti believes arming bylaw enforcement officers could help curb graffiti and other illegal activities.

Aside from allowing them to carry firearms, Mammoliti (Ward 7 – York West) would like to give bylaw enforcement officers the power to arrest. He says they’re often the first ones at the scene of an emergency, but have no power to intervene.

The would-be mayor is serious about stopping graffiti, which he says is often the work of gang members. The bylaw for defacing public property doesn’t have any teeth, he claims, because there are no resources to enforce it.

Aside from beefing up enforcement officers’ powers and increasing their numbers to 500 from the current 300, he believes increasing the fine for defacing city property to $5,000 would be a deterrent. The penalty is currently a few hundred dollars.

Mammoliti also thinks young people caught spraying graffiti or illegally posting flyers, and their parents, should be subject to community service.

A poll earlier this month suggested Mammoliti is trailing the other five top mayoral candidates with three per cent support.

Mammoliti would also like to impose an 11pm curfew for children under 14. He’s also floated the idea of building a waterfront casino and starting a Toronto-based lottery to raise revenues.
