Can A Lack Of Sleep Kill You?

Too much or too little sleep can be downright dangerous for your health, according to a new study.

Getting less than six hours of sleep on average has been linked to premature death, according to researchers at the University of Warwick in the U.K. and the Federico II University medical School in Naples.

Their findings can be found online in the May issue of the journal “Sleep.”

The researchers found getting less than six hours of shut eye a night was correlated with a 12 per cent higher chance of premature death, as opposed to the recommended six to eight hours a night.

But, the other extreme was also found to be unhealthy.

The study says consistently sleeping more than nine hours a night was also linked to an increased risk of death. Researchers say those who overslept often had an underlying medical condition.

The experts say that an occasional all-nighter, or morning of sleeping in won’t be detrimental to your overall health. But they say sleep is of similar importance to health as exercise.

The study analyzed data from more than one million people over a 25 year period.
