U Of T Campus To Shut Down For G20

With just a month left before world leaders descend on the city for the G20 summit, another institution has decided to shut its doors over security concerns.

Staff and students of the University of Toronto will not be allowed on the downtown campus from Thursday, June 24 to Sunday, June 27 although the summit doesn’t start until Saturday.

The decision came after summit organizers moved the official protest site from Trinity Bellwoods Park to the heart of the school’s campus at Queen’s Park.

There were no classes scheduled at the U of T during the closure, but some exams had to be postponed.

Some of the students who attend the school’s summer session and live in dorms near Queen’s Park will temporarily move to residences outside the affected area.

Also this month, officials decided to close the CN Tower from Friday to Sunday, and the Toronto Blue Jays announced the team’s three-game series against the Phillies, which was slated to take place at the Rogers Centre that weekend, has been moved to Philadelphia.

Last week, there was a sign the precautions may be warranted. A group claiming responsibility for firebombing a bank in downtown Ottawa said it will be at the G20 as well as the G8 in Huntsville on the same weekend.
