Tawdry Tale Of Mulroney-Schreiber Comes To Inconclusive End With Inquiry Report

Justice Jeffrey Oliphant will unveil Monday the final inconclusive chapter in the tawdry tale of Brian Mulroney’s dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber.

Oliphant was appointed by the Harper government two years ago to look into revelations that the former prime minister accepted at least $225,000 in cash-stuffed envelopes from the German-Canadian arms dealer.

The judge’s final report is not expected to shed any new light on the affair, which has been muddled by conflicting accounts from Mulroney and Schreiber.

Mulroney has admitted he acted inappropriately but insists he did nothing illegal.

Within hours of the report’s release, Mulroney will try to put it all behind him at a sold-out fundraising event in Toronto where he’ll rub shoulders with Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel and famed novelist Salman Rushdie.

He’ll be keeping better company than Schreiber, who is facing eight years in a German prison after recently being convicted of tax evasion.
