Man Wanted In Death Of Girlfriend

Police are hunting for a 39-year-old man after they discovered the body of his girlfriend in her west-end apartment Monday afternoon.

At about 4:30pm Monday, detectives were called to a building on Harding Ave., near Jane and Lawrence.

In the first-floor unit they discovered the body of 28-year-old Lucita Charles. It was almost 12 hours after her next-door neighbour heard a fight happening there.

“It was a lot of banging and throwing around. The pictures on the wall, they were shaking. I didn’t know what it was. I knew it was somebody fighting,” Jack Jardine described.

Charles was by all accounts a friendly woman from St. Lucia, who had come to Canada to seek better treatment for her seven-year-old son, Mateo.

“She had a nice son,” said Charles’ friend, Sonya Akhtar.

“She loved him and cared for him. She was a single mom and she took good care of her son.”

In fact, when she didn’t show up at the school bus stop to pick up Mateo, her friends and sister became worried and convinced building management to let them into her apartment. That’s when they found Charles’ body.

Police are now searching for 39-year-old Patrick Kirk Barrett on a charge of second-degree murder.

He is described as black, 6 feet 1 inch tall, with a medium build.

Police believe Barrett is either in, or on his way to, the Montreal area.

He may be driving a burnt orange, 2009, Kia Rio with Ontario licence plate BERR 171.
