Mike Harris To Receive Honorary Degree Amid Outrage

The teachers’ union at Nipissing University has warned of “dire consequences” if the institution goes ahead with plans to give former premier and alumnus Mike Harris an honorary degree on Friday.

In a report in the Toronto Star, the Ontario Teachers’ Federation said student teachers may boycott the North Bay school if Harris receives the honorary doctorate of letters, but it was not immediately clear how that would be implemented.

The union also threatened action if Nipissing University names a $23 million library after Harris.

The former premier called the warnings “bully tactics” and claimed as a former teacher and school board chairman he always put students first.

Many teachers have accused him of dismantling public education during his seven-year reign as Progressive Conservative premier, which ended in 2002.
