Memorials Planned To Mark 25th Anniversary Of Air India Bombings

Memorials are planned for this Wednesday to mark one of the darker chapters in Canada’s history.

People will gather in several cities, including Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa, to remember the 331 people killed in the two Air India bombings on June 23rd, 1985.

Though it’s been 25 years since a bomb downed Flight 182 off Ireland killing 329 people, and another bomb killed two airport baggage handlers in Tokyo, families of the mainly Canadian victims say they’re still awaiting justice.

Only one man, Inderjit Singh Reyat, has been convicted of supplying bomb parts for both attacks. Two other B.C. men were acquitted of all charges in March 2005.

A scathing public inquiry report issued last week said families of the Air India victims deserve compensation and an apology.

Preeti Berar, whose father was aboard Flight 182, says that while the victim’s families do deserve compensation for the colossal mistakes made by authorities, money won’t make a difference to her.
