England Advances To Round Of 16 With 1-0 Victory Over Slovenia, U.S. Beats Algeria 1-0

England reached the round of 16 at the World Cup on Wednesday, beating Slovenia 1-0 in the team’s final Group C match.

Jermain Defoe turned home a cross from James Milner in the 23rd minute to give England five points in the group. Slovenia finished with four.

Showing much better form after its dismal 0-0 draw with Algeria, England created several more chances throughout the match.

 


United States Advances From Group C With 1-0 Win Over Algeria At World Cup

Landon Donovan scored in injury time as the United States advanced to the round of 16 at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

England joined the United States in the next round from Group C with a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

The Americans missed two earlier chances Wednesday.

TV replays appeared to show Clint Dempsey to be onside when he tapped into the net from close range after being fed by Herculez Gomez in the 21st minute. Dempsey hit the post in the 57th and missed the rebound.

Rafik Djebbour was close to scoring Algeria’s first tournament goal in the sixth, with the striker’s shot hitting the crossbar after U.S. defender Jay DeMerit failed to clear a long ball.


Cahill, Holman Score As Australia Beats Serbia 2-1 In Group D At World Cup

Tim Cahill and Brett Holman scored second-half goals Wednesday to help Australia beat Serbia 2-1 in Group D of the World Cup.

Danko Lazovic pulled a goal back for Serbia.

Cahill put the Australians ahead with a glancing header from Luke Wilkshire’s cross in the 69th minute and Holman added the second from long range four minutes later.


Germany Beats Ghana 1-0 As Both Teams Advance To The Second Round From Group D

Germany beat Ghana 1-0 after a second-half goal from Mesut Oezil to win Group D and set up a second-round World Cup clash with traditional rival England.

Ghana also advanced despite Wednesday’s loss at Soccer City and became the first African team to make the round of 16.

Germany won the group with six points and Ghana was second with four, going through on goal difference thanks to Australia’s 2-1 victory over Serbia in the other match.

Oezil rifled a left-footed shot from outside the area into the left corner of the net to break the deadlock in the 60th minute after both teams had wasted a number of chances.
