Netherlands Reaches World Cup Quarter-Finals With 2-1 Victory Over Slovakia

Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder scored in each half Monday to give the Netherlands a 2-1 win over Slovakia and a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The Dutch went ahead in the 18th minute when Robben cut inside from the right flank and found the target with a low, precise shot from 20 yards. Sneijder doubled the lead into an empty net in the
84th.

Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg preserved the win with two key saves in the 67th, and the Dutch extended their team-record unbeaten streak to 23 games.

Robert Vittek pulled one back for Slovakia from the penalty spot in injury time.

In the quarter-finals, the Netherlands will face five-time champion Brazil.

 


Brazil Beats Chile 3-0

Brazil moved closer to a sixth World Cup title on Monday, beating South American rival Chile 3-0 to move into the quarter-finals.

Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho scored a goal each for the Brazilians.

Juan gave his team the lead in the 34th minute at Ellis Park with a firm header from a corner.

Luis Fabiano added to the lead in a fast breakaway in the 38th, receiving a one-touch pass from Kaka and dribbling past Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo inside the area before hitting the open net.

Robinho scored his first goal of the tournament with a shot from the edge of the area in the 59th.

Brazil will now face the Netherlands, which earlier Monday beat Slovakia 2-1 in Durban.
