Man Shot At Community Barbecue

Police are searching for two suspects after shots rang out at a community barbecue near Jane Street and Weston Road Sunday night. A man was hit by a stray bullet, possibly while trying to protect a child.

The gunfire erupted around 8:30pm at Portage Gardens Park on Sidney Belsey Crescent during an anti-violence barbecue where as many as 300 people were present.

The victim, said to be in his 20s, was treated in hospital and has since been released. Authorities don’t believe he was the intended target.

“It seems to be happening a bit too frequently in this area. It’s unfortunate it’s in a park area especially. It’s very random,” said area resident Yung Kwan.

Investigators are examining a home video recorded at the event. There’s no description yet of the two suspects.
