After 40 Years, Ontario Place Is Getting A Facelift

Ontario Place is nearly 40 years old and is showing its age.

The waterfront park is getting a facelift, courtesy of the provincial government.

The 96-acre summer-only site opened in 1971. Now, Queen’s Park would like to see it as a year-round venue with retail, education, culture, arts and entertainment. A formal request for new ideas went out this month and proposals have to be in by September 10.

It’s all part of a plan to revitalize the lake shore for tourists and residents alike.  Last year, one million people visited Ontario Place.

However, a local icon could be flattened in the renovations. The fate of the Cinesphere, the world’s first permanent IMAX theatre, is not known.

Work could begin as early as the end of next summer.
