OCAP Activists Arrested At Liberal Party Offices

Police have charged nine anti-poverty activists who briefly occupied the offices of the Ontario Liberal Party on Wednesday.

As many as 300 protesters gathered on Wednesday for a rally organized by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty – a group opposed to cuts to welfare recipients.

A few people broke away from the rally and took over the Liberals’ second-floor offices at Yonge and Bloor, appearing at the windows with a megaphone before being led away by police.

Eight people from Toronto and one from Oakville have been charged with mischief and forcible entry:

  • Iliam Burbano, 44
  • Kelly Burgess, 29
  • Lindsay Windhager, 27
  • Aleisha Cuff, 40
  • Rachel Hout, 25
  • Wendy Forrest, 64
  • John Clarke, 56
  • Lindsay Hart, 23 (of Oakville)

They were released on bail after appearing at a College Park court on Thursday morning.

Dalton McGuinty says the cost of the special diet allowance for people receiving welfare and disability payments has jumped from $6 million to $250 million a year and must be replaced.
