Blaze At Newmarket Plaza

Firefighters were called out to battle a blaze at a Newmarket strip mall early Thursday.

The fire erupted at the plaza at 1100 Davis Dr. at Leslie around 4am and it appears to have started in a cleaners. At one point, firefighters thought they had the blaze under control, but the flames spread through a double ceiling and burst out again.

Crews cut holes in the roof of the building in an effort to vent out the smoke and managed to get the blaze under control about three hours after it started.

There are six businesses in the strip plaza.

“There’s just so much damage that I don’t even know what I’m going to be able to do,” said Nancy, the owner of International Hair Salon.

“I have about 20 students right now and all of their equipment and everything else is inside. It’s just not that easy to set up somewhere else when you have something with fixtures and sinks and everything,” she added.

“It’s very tough.”

A firefighter and a police officer received minor injuries and no one else was hurt. The flames, smoke and water caused significant damage. No official estimate has been released yet.
