LCBO Sales Skyrocket In Hot Weather

It’s time to raise a glass to the LCBO – and while you’re at, have one for yourself.

After all, it’s what we’ve been doing all summer.

Sales at the arm’s length government agency skyrocketed this year, with purchases of beer and cider up 11.5 per cent over last year.

That’s a million more six packs sold, spokesperson Chris Layton said.

“Typically, beer and cider would experience the greatest lift when the weather gets warm,” Layton said in a phone interview with CityNews.ca

“There are a number of products that increase in sales when people are looking for a thirst-quenching drink,” he added.

In terms of volume, Ontario residents bought 2.4 million litres more booze in 2010 than we did in 2009.

“That’s a pretty dramatic increase,” said Layton.

“We also see stronger sales of ready to drink products, such as cocktails and coolers. White wine sales increase and sales of white products, like vodka and white rum, increase, as they tend to be used to make summer cocktails,” he said.

Last summer saw a few high-volume days as shoppers braced themselves for a possible strike.

“That skewed the sales a little bit… if you exclude those days, this would be one of our strongest summers because it’s the hottest,” Layton said.
