Mosquitoes In Toronto Test Positive For West Nile Virus

For the first time this summer, mosquitoes in Toronto have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Toronto Public Health received the lab reports on Friday, part of weekly testing of insects collected in 43 traps across the city.

The city uses larvicides in its catch basins to reduce the mosquito population, but suggests people take measures to thwart the parasitic creatures.

“The positive test result is a good reminder for the public to protect themselves from mosquito bites, and to reduce mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water around your home,” said Dan Kartzalis, Manager of the city’s West Nile Virus program.

No one has been infected in three years, but officials are concerned because the virus can cause serious illness.

Windsor and Peel Region have also found mosquitoes with the virus.

Tips For Preventing Mosquito Bites

  • Use mosquito repellent approved by Health Canada.
  • Wear light-coloured clothing and cover up when in areas where mosquitoes are present.
  • Take extra precautions, especially in early morning and early evening, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Remove standing water around your home and property.
