Heritage Group Puts View Of Queen’s Park On ‘Endangered Places’ List

The Heritage Canada Foundation listed the currently clear view of Queen’s Park on University Avenue on its top 10 Endangered Places list.

The non-profit organization that promotes the preservation of Canada’s historic buildings and places says a condominium development will ruin the “iconic silhouette” of the 117-year-old Legislative Assembly.

The provincial Liberals insisted this spring they wouldn’t step in to contest an Ontario Municipal Board decision to allow two condo towers to be erected by Menkes Developments behind the provincial Legislature at 21 Avenue Rd. Architectural experts and members of the Opposition claim the buildings will ruin the currently clear view of the historic structure.

The condos will be visible over the Queen’s Park roof top from University Avenue south of College Street.

Other entries on the most endangered list include Canada’s lighthouses, historic schools in Kitsilano and Vancouver and Winnipeg’s Warehouse District.

The group also released a Worst Losses list, which includes the Toronto heritage-designated Downsview Hangars and  Hamilton’s Centre Theatre.
