Ottawa Police Yet To Charge Man Arrested Outside Harper’s Residence

Ottawa police say a man arrested after an incident outside Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s official residence remains in custody.

The suspect was arrested by RCMP officers Saturday night after he was observed igniting a small quantity of a flammable liquid that he had poured onto the sidewalk outside 24 Sussex Drive.

A police statement says the matter “is being addressed over the course of the day.”

They say charges, if any, have yet to be determined by the investigators.

There were no injuries or property damage, and while police wouldn’t say whether the Harpers were at home, they did say that at no time was the prime minister, or members of his family, at any risk.

The Prime Minister’s Office is not commenting on the matter.

The Mounties turned the suspect over to Ottawa police.

The suspect’s name hasn’t been released and police say they won’t speculate on a possible motive this early in the investigation.
