A 33-year-old officer accidentally shot himself in the leg during a training exercise in Etobicoke Monday afternoon.
It happened just before 3pm during a range exercise at the Toronto Police College on Birmingham Street, near Islington Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West.
It appears the officer’s gun went off when he was putting it back in his holster.
His injuries aren’t life-threatening and he was alert and breathing when he was taken to hospital.
All officers, including the chief, have to go through the training every year in order to keep using their firearms.
Police spokesman Constable Tony Vella said the officer has been with the Toronto Police Service for “a while.”
