Tragic Twist To 401 Bus Rollover Fatality

Members of the Napanee Fire Department faced a tragic twist of fate as two unrelated accidents in the same weekend left 5 of their members injured and a woman dead.

Family members traveled to western Ontario to meet with firefighters who had been involved in an earlier, unrelated crash. Traveling by coach to return to Napanee, they were involved in the second accident, this one involving the death of a woman and the injury of 12 others, 4 of which were involved in the previous crash.

Highway 401 eastbound at the Highway 403 interchange has been closed for a police investigation.

The coach, operated by McCoy Bus Service, was headed eastbound on the 401 at 6am Sunday. It left the roadway and became airborne, then rolled into the ditch on the south side of the highway. The cause of the single vehicle accident is under investigation, although weather does not appear to be a factor.

Twelve people on board have been transported to hospital in the London, Ingersoll and Woodstock areas.

The eastbound lanes of the interchange of the 401 and 403 are expected to be closed for most of Sunday. Alternate routes have been established, but motorists should avoid the area if possible.
