Police Warning Public Of Local Scammers

Durham police are warning residents about a series of scams targeting local citizens.

The first is a high pressure pitch targeting seniors. Several contractors have been going door-to-door, pressuring seniors to sign contracts.

The work is generally outside home repair, and the contractors sometimes require full payment before the job is completed.

Police are advising residents of their rights to refuse entry to any salesperson. When dealing with contractors for home repairs, indicate you are in the practice of obtaining three quotes for any work done and then try and obtain referrals from friends or family.

Investigators are also warning the public about an online loan scam after a Clarington woman lost almost $6, 000.

The woman saw a newspaper ad offering loans for people with credit problems. After being approved for a $50, 000 loan, she was instructed to wire money for insurance purposes, and then more money for administration fees.

Police are reminding the public that any reputable financial institution will not ask for cash up front to cover loans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. McCagherty of the DRPS Fraud Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5279 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
