Gunman Dead, Hostages Freed In Discovery Headquarters Standoff

Three hostages being held in the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs Maryland have been safely recovered, while the armed gunman holding them was shot dead by police snipers Wednesday afternoon.

Police sources told CNN that the gunman has been identified as James Lee. Lee has reportedly posted a manifesto online criticizing the Discovery Channel.

In the document, Lee calls for new shows on the channel. He writes “focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue
pollution and are pollution.”

The initial call of trouble at the office came in around 1pm with a report of a suspicious package, possibly an explosive. Capt. Oscar Garcia of the Montgomery County fire department said at least three bomb technicians were called to the scene.

Police officials, who had been negotiating with Lee since shortly after 2pm, said he had become erratic.

Authorities said the suspect has “concerns” with Discovery, but wouldn’t elaborate. It’s not known if the reported gunman is a current or former employee.
