Ontario’s former top cop is poised to run in a federal by-election as a Conservative, according to a published report.
Julian Fantino brushed off rumours about a possible run for the mayor’s seat in Vaughan when his term as OPP commissioner ended in August.
The former Toronto Police chief reportedly wants to represent the Vaughan riding previously held by Liberal Maurizio Bevilacqua, who left his federal post to run for mayor.
Ontario Conservative Senator Bob Runciman believes Fantino would probably be offered a cabinet post if he wins the by-election. A date for the vote hasn’t yet been set.
While Fantino would likely be a popular candidate in Vaughan – he also served as chief of police in York Region and lives in Woodbridge – he’s also be a controversial figure, especially while he was Toronto’s top cop.
