10 Intersections. 10 People. One Question. Church and The Esplanade – Ward 28

What is the most important issue in the upcoming mayoral election? CityNews went to ten different wards across Toronto to find out what voters are talking about and what they want to see on October 25. In the second of the 10-part series, we went to Church and the Esplanade (Ward 28), where candidate George Smitherman has registered his campaign.

Here’s what voters had to say.

What is the most important issue in the upcoming mayoral election?

Property tax. Jonathan Black, IT industry.

Money. Marianne Gillis, retired.

No issue – it’s a lame election with lame duck candidates. Jennifer Gadd, market research.

Stop Rob Ford. Times are tough and we need to invest in, not cut, city services. Mike Gadd, market research.

Transit. Julie, television.

Anything to keep Ford out. Dorothy Creaser, retired.

Senior issues – it’s great that they’re talking about eliminating property tax for seniors who own their own homes, but what about those who don’t? Heather Anderson, retired.

Overdevelopment – it’s not enjoyable to live downtown. Damian, project manager.

Transit. Fred Reyes, self-employed.

Job creation. Darlene Burgess, manager.

And though he can’t vote in the upcoming election, Virginia bus driver Mike Rodriguez was only to happy to talk while he waited  for a tour group that was having lunch at Beer Markt.

“The Gardiner is just terrible. Something needs to be done – it’s a bottleneck that’s worse than the Lincoln Tunnel in New York,” he said.
