Councillor Holyday Endorses Ford

Rob Ford has picked up another endorsement: city councillor Doug Holyday threw his support behind the candidate on Monday.

“The reason that I’m endorsing Rob is that we have a history. The Ford family and myself have a history that goes back to 1994, when I ran for mayor of Etobicoke and won,” Holyday said outside the Etobicoke Civic Centre.

The Fords supported Holyday then and while that’s important, Holyday said, that only brought the discussion up to now. Toronto’s future, he said, involves Ford.

“The only direction for this city to take is to follow Rob Ford. Rob needs help and I know that he does need people on council, like myself, to get behind him and do what we can do to make sure this city goes in the right direction,” said Holyday.

A Toronto Star/Citytv poll released on Monday showed that Ford, once the clear leader, was now neck and neck with fellow mayoral candidate George Smitherman.

“George Smitherman has gathered around him now John Sewell, Joe Mihevc, Adam Vaugan, Pam McConnell – and I can’t tell the difference between that group and David Miller’s group,” Holyday said.

He also said the “Anyone But Ford” sentiment was desperate.

Like Ford, Holyday supported contracting out some city staff, which he did during his time as mayor.

“In Etobicoke as you know we contracted out the garbage back in 1995. We’re saving two million dollars a year as a result of that and we’ve avoided the perils of a strike,” he added.

“There’s only one difference here, and that’s Rob Ford,” Holyday said.

The Toronto Sun has endorsed Ford, as has Ward 26 Councillor John Parker.
