With One Week To Go, Poll Finds Smitherman And Ford Nearly Tied

With one week to go until Toronto’s municipal election, a recent poll has the two front-runners nearly tied.

Rob Ford and George Smitherman are neck and neck going into the October 25 vote, a Toronto Star-Citytv survey found. Ford has 41 per cent of popular support, while Smitherman is nipping at his heels with 40 percent.

Angus Reid Public Opinion spoke to 1,001 Toronto residents for the survey, which has a 3.1 per cent margin of error.

“Essentially, 40 and 41, in a sample of 1,001 Torontonians, is a dead heat,” Jodi Shanoff, senior vice-president of Angus Reid Public Opinion, told CityNews.

“Statistically, there’s no difference,” she said.

Deputy mayor Joe Pantalone had 16 per cent support.

“Within Joe Pantalone’s supporters, about half of them say they would consider going to somebody else, and if you break that down, most of those would go to Smitherman,”added David Rider, urban affairs bureau chief, Toronto Star.

“Joe’s support is really soft,” Rider added.

A second poll conducted by Nanos Research found that Ford has 43.9 per cent of voter support, followed by Smitherman with 40.5 per cent and Pantalone with 15 per cent.

“We know that ultimately, not everybody goes out to vote,” Shanoff said.
