$50,000 Reward Issued In 2009 Murder

Toronto Police have announced a $50,000 reward in a year-old murder.

Tevon Mitchell, 18, was killed at a house party on July 19, 2009. On Wednesday, his mother made a plea for witnesses to come forward.

“Talk to the police,” Vanessa Smichael said at a press conference.

“Talk to somebody, talk to CrimeStoppers, call CrimeStoppers. You don’t even have to say who you are. But somebody knows who murdered Tevon and I’m just begging for your help,” she added.

Officers were called to a home on Rouge Hills Drive around 2am. Emergency crews found Mitchell in the driveway, suffering from gunshot wounds to his stomach. He died in hospital.

Detectives say Mitchell was shot in front of the house.

“Investigators do not believe that Tevon was the intended target of the shooting,” Det. Graham Gibson said Wednesday.

“This is based on the investigation into Tevon’s background. He was not leading the lifestyle that would make him a target in a drive-by shooting,” Gibson said.

Two vehicles were seen fleeing after the gunshots. One is described as a white or lighter-coloured four-door sedan. The other was a dark-coloured vehicle.

The reward will be given for evidence leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
