Harper Gov’t Expected To Call Three Byelections

The Conservatives are set to call three byelections for November 29 for two ridings in Manitoba and one in Vaughan, Ontario.

A Conservative source tells The Canadian Press the byelections will be formally announced tomorrow.

The source says the Tories expect the Liberals to take at least two seats.

That’s putting the pressure on Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals as strong Tory and NDP candidates emerge.

Vaughan, which has been a Liberal stronghold for the past 22 years, is expected to be a high profile race.

Former OPP commissioner Julian Fantino will be running for the Tories after receiving Prime Minister’s public support last week.

Fantino goes up against NDP candidate Kevin Bordia and Liberal hopeful Tony Genco.

Some analysts predict the Liberal loss of the Vaughan would be a huge blow for party leader Michael Ignatieff.

Meanwhile, the two Manitoba byelections are in Winnipeg North and Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette.

The Winnipeg North riding is an NDP stronghold and NDP candidate and aboriginal community leader Kevin Chief will try to keep it that way.

He goes up against MLA Kevin Lamoreux for the Liberals and Julie Javier for the Tories.

Robert Sopuck will be running for the Conservatives in Dauphin, which has been held by the Tories for years.
