CityNews Claims Gemini Award For Summer Tornado Coverage

CityNews claimed a Gemini award on Tuesday night, taking home the hardware for Best Breaking News Coverage after a powerful F2 tornado touched down in southern Ontario, destroying numerous homes and claiming the life of a young man.

Our reporters fanned out across Vaughan the night the violent storm hit last summer.

While our brave cameramen and reporters rushed to document the carnage — writers, producers, and floor directors, to name a few, were busy behind the scenes, assuring we gave you seamless coverage.

Producer Amar Sodhi and Meteorologist Michael Kuss accepted the award.

“You know it’s a team effort when your vice president (Tina Cortese) is out doing floor directing simply because that’s what needed to be done to get the story told, so this is a true team effort,” a sharply-dressed Sodhi said from the podium.

“We’d like to dedicate this to all the people who lost their homes that night,” added Kuss.  ” And most importantly the young man…who lost his life.”

Vice President of News, Tina Cortese, brought the trophy home to the newsroom not long after the award was doled out.

“This belongs to the entire newsroom, the entire newsroom that pulled together that night to provide the coverage that viewers expect from us and have expected from us over the years.”

Producer Ramneek Gill stressed how important each employees’ role was.

“Our anchors are great, we couldn’t ask for better reporters, but it’s also the team behind the scenes at CityNews…they jump in whenever anything needs to be done.  Breaking news is what we live for and this is a testament to what defines CityNews.”
