Emma Donoghue’s ‘Room’ Wins Rogers Writers’ Trust Award

A Man Booker Prize finalist, dueling brother and sister novelists, a husband and wife team, and the author of a graphic memoir. Those were the finalists for one of the country’s richest arts prizes.

But in the end it was Emma Donoghue’s Room that won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Award. The announcement came at a ceremony Tuesday in Toronto.

Almost $150,000 was doled out at the Awards gala at the Isabel Bader Theatre hosted by literature enthusiast, Shelagh Rogers.

The jury read 143 books and whittled down the list to five finalists, each of whom receives $2,500.

The nominees were: Trevor Cole for Practical Jean, Emma Donoghue for Room, Michael Helm for Cities of Refuge, Kathleen Winter for Annabel, and Michael Winter for The Death of Donna Whalen.

And although the focus was on the $25,000 fiction prize for novels, the Writers’ Trust awards also honoured non-fiction and short-story writers.
