White Powder In Safe Deposit Box Prompts Police Investigation

A strange white powder discovered in a downtown Oshawa bank last week has prompted a police investigation.

The substance, found Thursday afternoon inside a safety deposit box, was harmless, police said.

A customer opened the family-owned box at a Bank of Montreal branch on Simcoe Street at Athol, around 1pm and found the white powder inside, authorities said. The bank was evacuated, officials in protective clothing were brought in and the Ministry of Health was notified, as a precaution.

Lab results received Friday showed the substance wasn’t dangerous. Police continue to investigate, saying “this incident is not considered random in nature.”
