Montreal Memorial Planned For Victims Of Air India Bombing

As Montreal prepares for the country’s fourth memorial to the victims of the Air India bombing, the federal government is planning a “roadmap” for future counter-terrorism efforts.

Air India Flight 182 left Toronto on June 23, 1985 and exploded in the sky off the Irish coast, killing all 329 people aboard, 278 of them Canadians.

Immigration Mnister Jason Kenney was in Montreal on the weekend when the newest memorial was unveiled.

Later, Kenney said the Conservative government has a “comprehensive” plan aimed at closing security loopholes. The “roadmap” for counter-terrorism will improve co-operation between national security agencies and police. Kenney also said it will strengthen airport security on both the passenger and cargo side, and make it easier to prosecute terrorists.

Kenney says compensation is forthcoming for the families of the victims.

The other monuments are in Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa.
