Citytv Shares The ‘Spirit Of The Season’ For The Food Bank

Hundreds of people put their holiday spirit on display Friday, turning up at a Citytv party to help out the Daily Bread Food Bank.

The fifth annual Breakfast Television/Citytv Spirit of the Season celebration started at 6am in the lobby at the Sheraton Centre on Queen Street West. Audience members were treated to warm beverages, incredible performances and prizes.

Members of the Toronto Rock were at the BT party, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and his wife Terri attended to make a food bank donation and Santa Claus made a grand entrance following a raucous round of “ho, ho, hos” from the audience.

The Grinch also made an appearance, providing a preview of his musical currently playing at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Singer Jrdn (aka Jordan Crouch) hit the stage, the Toronto Mass Choir inspired Yule Tide spirit and the soulful tenor Mark Masri wowed the crowd.

Audience members received some amazing prizes, including video game consoles, Disney on Ice tickets, Blue Mountain and Niagara packages and a March Break motor home prize package.

While the performances and prizes were amazing, the fundraising goal of the day-long event wasn’t lost.

“We know that over the last year the need at Daily Bread has risen by 16 per cent. That is 123,000 extra uses,” Daily Bread’s executive director Gail Nyberg said. “Although the recession is over on paper, it is not over for the real people … we need the help this year.”

Spirit of the Season raised $73,800 and 5,500 pounds of food for Daily Bread Food Bank. If you couldn’t make it to the event but would like to donate, click here.
