Habitat For Humanity Houses 50 People

A recent Habitat for Humanity build provided new homes to 50 people in Toronto.

The charity handed out the keys to 11 units in the William’s Way development on Sunday.

Each of the families contributed 500 hours of labour to the project, with volunteers also helping with the construction.

“Like Canadians everywhere, having a clean, safe, comfortable home in which to gather for the holidays has been a dream for these families,” CEO Neil Hetherington said in a statement.

“I’m delighted that with their own hard work and the donation of 100,000 volunteer hours, that dream will be a reality this year,” he added.

The Home Depot Canada Foundation made a two-year, $550,000 commitment for the site.

Eventually, there will be 20 townhomes on the Weston Road and Jane Street site, providing housing for 96 people.

The homes uses solar technology and will also meet GreenHouse® certified construction standards. Habitat for Humanity says the homes will be 25 to 30 per cent more energy efficient than those built to minimum Ontario Building Code standards.
