Vigil To Be Held Friday For Men Killed In Scaffolding Collapse

A candlelight vigil will be held Friday for four men who died on the job one year ago.

Aleksey Blumberg, 33, Vladimir Korostin, 40, Fayzullo Fazilov, 31, Aleksanders Bondarevs, 25, all fell to their deaths on December 24, 2009.

They were all migrant workers. Earlier this month, the province released a report calling for mandatory safety training at construction sites, including information on workplace rights and responsibilities before starting a job.

“We are gathering to mark the memory of those dead and demand that immediate action be taken to ensure full status, workplace protection, health benefits and just workers compensation for all workers, particularly those without full status,” “said Mohan Mishra, organizer with No One Is Illegal-Toronto and one of the groups organizing the vigil.

The men were restoring a balcony on the 13th floor at 2757 Kipling Ave. when their scaffolding stage collapsed.

Six men were on the stage at the time. When a seventh man stepped on the platform, the stage snapped in two.

Dilshod Marupov, 22, survived the fall, but broke both his legs and his spine. A sixth man, who was attached to a lifeline, was rescued.

The vigil, which also recognizes the rights of migrant workers, will be held at 2757 Kipling Ave. at 2pm.
