Canadian Couple Killed In Road Accident In Thailand; Two Other Canadians Injured

A Canadian couple have been killed in Thailand after the makeshift bus they were travelling in went off the road and hit a pole in the tourist island of Phuket.

Local media reports say two other Canadians and an Australian were injured in the accident and remain in hospital.

The reports said police identified the husband and wife as Kongseng Sunthorn, 61, and Aryporn Sunthorn, 50.

News reports said they were from Hamilton and were well known in the Laotian community.

The identities of the injured were not known.

The accident happened just minutes into New Year’s Day when the vehicle _ a pickup truck configured with seating in the covered rear _ was travelling from Phuket International Airport airport to a new west coast resort.

The reports quote police as saying the vehicle ran off the road while trying to overtake another vehicle on a winding and hilly stretch of the road.

Superintendent Colonel Witoon Kongsudjai of Cherng Talay Police Station told local media that the Canadian and Australian embassies had been notified.
