SIU Investigating After Man Dies In Custody

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a man died in police custody.

The victim, who hasn’t been identified, was arrested at a No Frills grocery store on Sunday.

The SIU alleges the security team at the Lawrence Avenue and Markham Road store first apprehended the man. He was then taken into custody by a Toronto police officer.

He then allegedly went into medical distress and paramedics were called in. The man was taken to Scarborough General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim’s name has not been released.
