Yorkdale Announces $220M Expansion

Yorkdale is getting a major facelift that will add 40 new stores, 800 extra parking spaces and cost $220 million.

Construction on the 1.5-million-square-foot mall, one of Canada’s largest, begins this month and should be complete by late next year. This project will add 145,000 square feet to the complex.

“We’re expanding thanks to the strength and success of the existing shopping centre and strong tenant demand for space,” general manager Anthony Casalanguida said in a press release.

“Not only are we bringing an amazing array of new brands to Yorkdale, but this expansion will also bring employment opportunities to the GTA, both during the construction phase and once retailers open.”

The plan also includes relocating the food court, adding more restaurants and seats, and switching to reusable tableware.

The mall, located at Dufferin and Highway 401, carried out a $110-million expansion in 2005, and now boasts the high-end brands Tiffany & Co., Burberry, and Holt Renfrew, as well as a branch of the popular U.S. chain Crate and Barrel.
