Embarrassing Flub For Aguilera At The Super Bowl

The intention was good.

With tens of millions watching, Christina Aguilera bungled the lyrics of the American national anthem at the start of the Super Bowl Sunday. The singer issued a statement shortly after her performance, claiming she got caught up in the moment and lost her place.

The five-time Grammy-award winner sang: “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming,” instead of the correct lyric, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.”

The error quickly became a big topic of discussion on various social networking sites.

“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through,” Aguilera said in a statement issued after her performance.

Aguilera had been practicing for that moment for some time. In another statement released by the singer last month she said she has been singing the anthem since she was seven-years-old and “I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true.”

Aguilera may take comfort in the fact that she’s not the first to flub “The Star-Spangled Banner”.

Macy Gray received a round of boos for her version of the anthem at the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game in 2001 and later said it was “definitely life’s most embarrassing moment.”

The Black Eyed Peas have also received less-than-stellar reviews for their performance during the half-time show Sunday night. Critics have panned the performance, calling it flat and stiff. Usher and former Guns n’ Roses guitarist Slash are being credited for breathing some life into the spectacle.
