G20 Protester Wants Cop Charged With Assault

The lawyer for a Montreal woman suing Toronto police for allegedly being shot with rubber bullets during the G20 summit wants the officer to be criminally charged.

Police agreed to a criminal investigation on Friday after Clayton Ruby he wrote to police Chief Bill Blair saying the officer should be charged with assault and unlawful use of a firearm.

Ruby says he provided the chief with a photograph of the officer and video of the alleged incident since police can’t seem to identify him on their own.

“That is clearly identifiable he should be charged with a crime,” Ruby said. “He should be investigated.”

Ruby alleges 20-year-old Natalie Gray was struck by two rubber bullets while taking part in a peaceful protest outside a police detention centre and suffered an infection.

Gray says she was terrified and that a senior officer told her to “suck it up” when she asked to see a doctor.

Gray says she waited half an hour for medical attention and wants police to be held accountable.

But police criticized Ruby for using the media to air his grievance.

“We’re not going to discuss this in the media,” said Toronto police spokesperson, Mark Pugash. “Mr. Ruby has a civil claim and that will be discussed where it should be – in court. And we will be conducting an investigation into this. We said that, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
