Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion turns 90

While many know Monday as Valentine’s Day, Mississauga residents are celebrating a much more personal occasion: Mayor Hazel McCallion’s 90th birthday.

‘Hurricane Hazel’ has been mayor since 1978 and won her 12th term just last fall.

However, after more than 32 years in office, the newest Nonagenarian McCallion has said she would not be running again.

Under her leadership, Mississauga became the third largest city in Ontario and the sixth largest in Canada, with a population of 734,000. The city has not had to borrow money since her 1978 election and is currently debt-free.

Her accomplishments have garnered McCallion quite a few fans.

She had a four-hour birthday party on Sunday with 2,000 of her closest friends showing up to fete her worship.
