Politicians return to Queen’s Park, talk TSX merger

Ontario’s politicians have returned to Queen’s Park in their last session before the October 6 election.

Members of Parliament discussed a proposed merger between the TSX and the London Stock Exchange, the budget and soaring electricity costs across the province. MPs also debated a ban on public transit strikes in Toronto.

The Liberals, who have been in power for two terms, announced they would be holding public hearings into the proposed merger between the Toronto and London stock exchanges.

“What we have to do is ensure that Canadian firms continue to have good access, affordable access, to world markets,” Finance Minister Dwight Duncan told reporters at Queen’s Park on Tuesday.

“Let’s ask the questions about the cost of listings. If you have fewer markets in the world, markets that aren’t based here, does that mean Canadian firms will pay the same price for listings,” Duncan added.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Conservatives and the New Democratic Party are sharpening their attacks on the governing Liberals.

The NDP are hinting they may stall a bill intended to make the TTC an essential service.

“Let’s not forget, in every situation where you have essential services legislation, it drives up the cost,” NDP leader Andrea Horwath said.
