Sarah Thomson to run as Liberal in Ontario election

Former Toronto mayoral candidate and  publishing executive Sarah Thomson will run in the Trinity-Spadina riding for the Liberals in October’s provincial election.

“I did my homework before choosing a political party,” Thomson said on her Facebook page

“I investigated both the Ontario Liberal Party and the Ontario PC Party to find which party today best represents my core values.  As a socially progressive woman who believes firmly in fiscal responsibility, I identify with good ideas over partisan ideology,” she continued, adding that she supports the Liberals’ plan for Ontario as well as its leadership and integrity.

“I am proud to say, I choose the Ontario Liberal Party,” she said.

Her former mayoral rival Rocco Rossi, a former Liberal, has said he will run for the Progressive Conservatives in the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence.

There’s no word on whether George Smitherman, the former deputy premier who finished second to Mayor Rob Ford last October, will try for a return to provincial politics.

The 40th Ontario general election will occur on Oct. 6, 2011.
